(1911-1974)
Born in Korsano Poland, he moved to Berlin in 1929. Abandoning rabbinical studies, he began to study painting with Karl Hoffer at the Academy, meanwhile earning his living by designing posters for the UFA film company.
In 1934 he settled in Haifa and continued working as a designer of posters for movies. In 1949-1950 he worked in Paris. His early figurative canvases featured a green-blue-brown chromatlsm, the subsequent abstract paintings were in brighter colors, and from 1966 on he worked on large sheets of paper with mixed media techniques.
During his lifetime his work was seen mainly in group shows; several memorial exhibitions were held after his death. He was the recipient of the Dizengoff Prize (1942,1951,1961), the Struck Prize (1957), the Schiff Award (1969) and the Milo Prize (1972).
